Red Sea Reef
To anyone standing on its shore and gazing out across its heavenly waters, the
Red Sea may seem to be mislabelled.
It's located between Asia and Africa, along the coast of Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea. The reef includes many things like aquatic life, platforms, lagoons, and cylinders. It is the home to more than 1,100 species. Live coral cover throughout the Red Sea reefs is generally high, at about 60–70 percent, as is the diversity of stony and soft corals, fish (including the famous Red Sea lionfish), and other reef organisms. More than 260 different species of stony coral have been identified in the central Red Sea.
Red Sea fringing reef platforms are over 5000 years old, and is still always changing, in reality it is a young ocean in the early stage of formation.
The Red Sea provides the perfect resource from which reefs are able to grow – warm, salt water. Red Sea corals have developed an unusually high tolerance to the extreme temperatures, salinity, and occasional turbidity (caused by huge seasonal dust storms) that occur. Such conditions that would be highly damaging to most hard corals found elsewhere. The extreme air temperatures result with lots of evaporation, making this one of the hottest and saltiest bodies of seawater in the world.
Scuba diving and snorkeling on the fringing reefs of the Red Sea became popular soon after the publicity, books, and films of the expeditions of Hans Hass and
Jacques Cousteau in the 1950s and 1960s. And yet is still very popular, and a great place for tourists.
